Article I — Name, Purpose, and Non-Discrimination Policy.

Section 1: Name

The name of this organization shall be UnderLings.

Section 2: Purpose

The purpose of this organization shall be to promote discussion among undergraduates interested in current issues and research topics pertaining to the field of linguistics.

Section 3: Non-Discrimination Policy

This organization and its members shall not discriminate against any individual(s) for reasons of race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, sex, age, handicap, or Vietnam-era veteran status.

Article II — Membership: Qualifications and categories of membership.

Section 1: Voting members

Voting membership is limited to students currently enrolled at The Ohio State University.

Section 2: Non-Voting members

Faculty, staff, and alumni are eligible to participate as non-voting members of the organization.

Article III — Organization Leadership: Titles, terms of office, type of selection, and duties of the leaders.

Section 1: Titles

This organization shall be served by a President, Vice President, and Treasurer.

Section 2: Terms of office

The term of office shall not be limited.

Section 3: Type of selection

The President shall be appointed by the outgoing President. The Vice President and Treasurer shall be appointed by the current President.

Section 4: Duties of the leaders

The President shall be responsible for obtaining funding for the organization, setting meeting dates, preparing meeting agendas, and presiding over meetings.

The Vice President shall be responsible for reserving meeting spaces, notifying the membership of meetings, and presiding over meetings in the absence of the President.

The Treasurer shall be responsible for administering the organization’s bank account, paying the organization’s bills, completing and submitting the annual student organization audit form, and presiding over meetings in the absence of both the President and Vice President.

Article IV — Adviser.

Section 1: Qualifications

The adviser of this organization shall be a full-time faculty member or Administrative and Professional staff member at The Ohio State University.

Section 2: Selection

In the absence of an adviser, the President shall secure an adviser.

Section 3: Responsibilities

The adviser shall consult with student leaders when needed on matters of organization business.

Article V — Meetings of the Organization: Required meetings and their frequency.

Section 1: Required meetings

This organization shall hold not fewer than one (1) general membership meeting during the autumn, winter, and spring academic terms.

Article VI — Method of Amending Constitution: Proposals, notice, and voting requirements.

Section 1: Proposals

A proposed amendment to the Constitution shall be submitted in writing to the President.

Section 2: Notice

A proposed amendment shall be read aloud at the general membership meeting immediately following the President’s receipt of the written proposal. At the following general membership meeting, the proposed
amendment shall be read aloud a second time, at which juncture a vote shall be taken on the proposed amendment.

Section 3: Voting requirements

Passage of an amendment to the Constitution shall require a two-thirds majority of the entire voting membership of the organization.
