Q:What is linguistics?
A: The scientific study of language. There are a number of subfields including Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics, Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics, Historical Linguistics, and Computational Linguistics.
Q: So.. How many languages do you speak?
A: It's a common misconception that a linguist is a person who speaks many languages. The term for that is actually "polyglot". Some linguists are only fluent in their own native language. Some have a passable knowledge of two or three other languages. Others speak several languages fluently and have extensive knowledge of even more. There's a whole spectrum of second language skill. Knowledge of foreign langues is helpful, but not requisite to the job of a linguist.
